Brand Development Specialist
Denise Marcil began her career in the editorial departments of Avon Books and Simon and Schuster, Inc. where she learned to identify talented writers, edit books and negotiate contracts. Her passion for stories led to opening her own literary agency to represent commercial fiction, and her pragmatism made her the perfect agent for practical nonfiction. She has discovered hundreds of authors in both disciplines and built the careers of many, who have become internationally successful, bestselling authors. She now represents a select group of longtime clients and no longer takes on new authors. She consults with the Marcil-O’Farrell Agency. Here are some examples–novelist Sherryl Woods and a parenting and health expert team, Dr. William Sears and Martha Sears–whose brands Denise helped develop.
Sherryl Woods

Vivid characters, extended families and small-town settings characterize many of Sherryl Woods’s series romances. Dr. William Sears and Martha Sears, R.N.
The most respected childcare experts around the world.
Dr. William Sears tells the story of seeking literary representation after publishing a few childcare books. He interviewed many agents, and several advised him to write specific books. He wasn’t interested. Denise Marcil asked him, “What do you want to write next?” She sensed he knew what parents wanted to know. He liked her response and chose her to represent him and his wife, Martha. She guided Dr. Sears and Martha, a nurse, lactation consultant and expert and mother of their eight children through the writing of a proposal for THE BABY BOOK: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two. Published in 1993, the book, now in its third edition, has sold more than one million copies in the U.S., nearly as many in China and hundreds of thousands in Russia and other foreign countries.
Published by Little, Brown, since 1993, the Sears Parenting Library includes 21 books and four outstanding children’s picture books. A son, Dr. Robert Sears, who is an expert in vaccines and autism, is sole author of The Vaccine Book and The Autism Book. The Sears family of physicians, Dr. Jim Sears (of the popular TV show The Doctors), Dr. Robert Sears and Dr. Peter Sears, are co-authors along with Dr. Bill and Martha Sears of several books in the Sears Parenting Library.
Through the years Denise Marcil has worked closely with Dr. Bill and Martha Sears, advising them on marketing and publicity and which books to write next for “the Library.” She has marketed their names, reputation and books around the world, licensing their books in 23 foreign countries. Dr. Sears is now the most respected physician in China. With this reputation and the success of their books in China, Denise Marcil and business partner Anne Marie O’Farrell suggested the Sears write a book specifically for the Chinese market.
When Dr. Sears’s interest in health and wellness extended to adults, Denise Marcil encouraged him through his ten years of writing Prime Time Health: A Scientifically Proven Plan for Feeling Young and Living Longer. He continues to write on wellness for adults and children.
